The Church of the Transfiguration crowns the summit of Mount Tabor, a Franciscan church built in 1924 on the traditional site where Jesus was transfigured before his disciples. The church, designed by Antonio Barluzzi (the architect behind many of Israel’s most beautiful churches), incorporates remains of earlier Byzantine and Crusader churches and features a stunning golden mosaic of the Transfiguration in the apse.
The Church
Barluzzi designed the church with two towers flanking the entrance, representing the tents that Peter offered to build for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. The interior is airy and luminous, and the gold mosaic above the altar depicts the moment of Transfiguration with Jesus in radiant white flanked by the two prophets. Three chapels behind the altar are dedicated to Jesus, Moses, and Elijah respectively.
The lower level preserves remains from the 4th-century Byzantine church and the 12th-century Crusader church that preceded the current building. A Greek Orthodox church and monastery occupy another part of the summit.
