Kfar Kana, a small Arab town just northeast of Nazareth, is the traditional site of Jesus’ first miracle: turning water into wine at a wedding feast (John 2). Two churches in the town, one Franciscan and one Greek Orthodox, compete for the honor of marking the exact location. Both are worth visiting. And yes, you can buy wine.
The Miracle
According to the Gospel of John, Jesus, his mother, and his disciples attended a wedding in Cana of Galilee. When the wine ran out, Mary told Jesus about the problem. He instructed the servants to fill six stone jars with water. When they drew from the jars, the water had become wine, and the master of the feast declared it the best wine of the evening. It is a story about generosity, celebration, and a mother who knew her son could handle it.
The Churches
The Franciscan Wedding Church, built in 1881 over earlier remains, displays an ancient stone jar said to be one of the original six. The Greek Orthodox Church of St. George also claims the site and contains its own ancient artifacts. The competition between the two churches has been going on for centuries and shows no sign of resolution. Visitors can decide for themselves.
Many Christian couples renew their wedding vows at Kfar Kana, and the Franciscan church holds renewal ceremonies regularly.
