Ein Nun: A Hidden Spring Near the Sea of Galilee

Ein Nun is a cluster of freshwater springs on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, near Tabgha. The springs feed a series of ancient fish pools that have been in use since at least the Roman period, and the warm water they produce attracts tilapia and other fish to this stretch of shoreline. This may explain why the area around Tabgha became associated with fishing and with the miracle of the loaves and fishes.

The Springs and the Fish

The Ein Nun springs produce warm, mineral-rich water that flows into the lake, creating conditions that attract large concentrations of fish. Ancient inhabitants built stone pools to trap the fish, and the remains of these pools are still visible. The connection between the springs, the fish, and the Gospel stories of miraculous catches is hard to ignore: this is exactly the stretch of shore where Jesus told his disciples to cast their nets.

The Trail

A walking trail connects Ein Nun to Tabgha and the Church of the Primacy of Peter along the lakeshore. The path follows the water’s edge through a landscape of springs, pools, and lakeside vegetation, offering a quieter alternative to the busier pilgrimage sites nearby.
