Gan HaShlosha (Sachne): Natural Warm Springs

Gan HaShlosha (the Park of the Three), also known by its Arabic name Sachne, is a national park built around natural warm springs at the foot of Mount Gilboa. The springs, which flow at a constant 28 degrees Celsius year-round, feed a series of pools surrounded by lawns, palm trees, and ancient ruins. The park has been called one of the most beautiful places in Israel, and on a hot day, it is certainly one of the most refreshing.

The Springs

The warm springs emerge from the base of Mount Gilboa, where groundwater heated by the earth’s interior reaches the surface. The water is clear, warm, and rich in minerals, and the pools it feeds range from shallow wading areas to deep swimming pools. The main pool is surrounded by manicured lawns and shade trees, creating a setting that feels more like a tropical resort than the Jezreel Valley.

The Name

The park is named after three men involved in local security who were killed in 1938 during the Arab Revolt. Their memorial stands at the entrance to the park. The Arabic name, Sachne, derives from the word for “warm” or “hot,” referring to the springs.

The park contains the remains of a flour mill from the Ottoman period, fed by the same springs that now fill the swimming pools. The mill has been partially restored, and the water channels that powered it are still visible. A reconstructed Roman-period bathhouse shows that people have been enjoying these warm springs for at least 2,000 years.

The Museum of Regional and Mediterranean Archaeology, within the park, displays finds from the surrounding area, including the spectacular mosaic from the nearby Beit Alpha synagogue.

Planning Your Swim

The water stays at a comfortable 28°C (82°F) throughout the year, making Gan HaShlosha a genuine year-round swimming destination. The park is managed by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, and entry fees apply (the national parks multi-visit card is accepted). Changing rooms and shower facilities are available near the main pools, and lifeguards are on duty during the summer season. The wide lawns surrounding the pools are ideal for picnics, and many families spread out blankets for the afternoon. The park is extremely popular with Israeli families, especially on weekends, holidays, and Shabbat, when it can become uncomfortably crowded. Visiting on a weekday is strongly recommended for a calmer, more enjoyable experience.
