Rosh Pina: The Pioneer Village That Became a Gem

Rosh Pina holds a special place in the story of modern Israel. Founded in 1882 by Romanian Jewish immigrants, it was one of the first modern Jewish settlements in the Galilee and a pioneer of the agricultural movement that would eventually build a state. Today, its restored stone buildings, boutique hotels, and gallery-lined streets make it one of the most charming villages in Israel.

The Pioneers

The founders of Rosh Pina arrived in a malaria-ridden, impoverished Galilee with romantic ideals and almost no farming experience. The early years were brutal. Crops failed, disease spread, and money ran out. The settlement survived largely thanks to the intervention of Baron Edmond de Rothschild, who funded agricultural experts, purchased land, and kept the colony alive during its most desperate years.

The Old Town

The restored old quarter of Rosh Pina is a gem. The original stone houses have been converted into restaurants, galleries, bed-and-breakfasts, and artisan workshops. The main street, lined with bougainvillea and old-fashioned street lamps, has an atmosphere that is equal parts 19th-century charm and 21st-century sophistication.

The panoramic view from the hilltop is spectacular: the Hula Valley spreads out below, with Mount Hermon rising in the distance and the Golan Heights forming the eastern wall.

Visit with Hoshen Tours

Rosh Pina pairs naturally with Safed, the Hula Valley, and the upper Galilee countryside. Hoshen Tours includes it in itineraries that tell the pioneer story of modern Israel.
