Domus Galilaeae: A Modern Retreat Above the Lake

Domus Galilaeae (House of the Galilee) is a modern retreat and study center perched on the hill above Tabgha and Capernaum, built by the Neocatechumenal Way. The building, completed in 2000, is one of the most architecturally striking religious structures built in Israel in recent decades, and its location on the Mount of Beatitudes ridge gives it views of the Sea of Galilee that are genuinely breathtaking.

The Architecture

The building was designed to bridge Jewish and Christian symbolism in a single structure. The main hall is modeled after a synagogue, with a raised reading platform at its center. A fragment of a Torah scroll from Poland, rescued from the Holocaust, is displayed under glass in the floor. The roof terrace, accessible by a spiral staircase, opens to a panoramic view of the lake, the Golan Heights, and the surrounding hills. The combination of ancient symbolism and contemporary design creates a space that feels both rooted and forward-looking.

The Chapel and the Garden

The chapel, built partially underground, is intimate and contemplative. Its design draws on the theme of descent and ascent, echoing the biblical idea of going down to the depths before rising. The surrounding gardens are landscaped with native plants and stone paths that lead to viewpoints overlooking the lake. Walking through the grounds, you move between interior spaces of prayer and exterior spaces of natural beauty in a rhythm that feels intentional and meditative.

The Connection to the Sermon on the Mount

Domus Galilaeae sits on the same ridge as the Mount of Beatitudes, the traditional site where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount. The center was built as a place where the Beatitudes could be studied and lived, not just remembered. Groups from around the world come here for retreats, seminars, and spiritual formation, and the setting, above the lake where Jesus taught, gives the experience a resonance that few retreat centers can match.

Visiting

Domus Galilaeae is open to visitors by arrangement and is particularly meaningful for Christian groups. The architectural tour, the Torah scroll, and the rooftop view combine into an experience that is both intellectually stimulating and spiritually powerful.
