The Har Adar Memorial stands on a hilltop west of Jerusalem, overlooking the Jerusalem Corridor and the route from the coastal plain to the capital. The memorial honors IDF soldiers who fell in the battles for the Jerusalem area, and its location on one of the highest points in the Jerusalem hills provides panoramic views that explain why this terrain has been fought over for millennia.
Location
Har Adar (Mount Adar) sits at 795 meters above sea level, one of the highest points in the Jerusalem hills. The view from the memorial encompasses the coastal plain to the west (on a clear day, the Mediterranean is visible), the Ayalon Valley and Latrun to the southwest, and the outskirts of Jerusalem to the east. The strategic importance of the hilltop, controlling the approaches to Jerusalem from the west, made it a natural location for a memorial to those who defended the city.
The Memorial
The memorial site includes a monument, a garden of remembrance, and information about the battles fought in the Jerusalem Corridor during the 1948 War of Independence, the Six-Day War, and subsequent conflicts. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the memorial walls.
